Rama: Albania's Confidence in NATO Deters Russian Aggression
Tirana Times | November 5, 2025
In a bold statement that has sparked debate, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has dismissed Western concerns about potential Russian aggression in Europe, asserting that Moscow has no intention of attacking Albania or any other NATO or EU member state. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Rama emphasized the strength of NATO, describing it as the "strongest military alliance in the world."
"Russia will not dare to attack Albania or any other European country," Rama declared. "NATO is fully prepared and capable of defending against any aggression."
This confident stance comes at a time of heightened tensions across Europe. Since September, several countries, including Poland, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Romania, have reported Russian drone incursions and airspace violations. The situation escalated on September 19 when NATO intercepted three Russian MiG-31 jets suspected of entering Estonian airspace, an incident Moscow denied. Despite these incidents, Rama remains steadfast in his belief that NATO's deterrence is robust and that no member state is under direct military threat.
Albania's alignment with NATO and the EU is unwavering. Since joining NATO in 2009 and receiving EU candidate status in 2014, Albania has actively supported EU sanctions against Russia and participated in regional security initiatives. Rama acknowledges the pressure on border countries but advocates for a strategic and measured response, urging the EU to defend itself and strengthen its defenses.
Furthermore, Rama suggests that Europe should go beyond containment and develop a comprehensive peace plan for Ukraine, complementing U.S. efforts to end the war. This perspective reflects a broader European debate on balancing deterrence with diplomacy and highlights Albania's role as a small but influential NATO ally, advocating for stability in a volatile geopolitical landscape.
