Mysterious Break-In at Alpine's Engine Facility Sparks Industrial Espionage Concerns
A recent break-in at Alpine's Viry power unit facility has raised suspicions of industrial espionage, despite no apparent theft. According to French media, two individuals entered the building's entrance hall and made their way to the upper floor, where senior management and executive offices are located. The intruders appeared to have knowledge of the premises, as they opened several office doors. Interestingly, no damage or stolen items were reported, and team sources confirmed that no equipment, documentation, or material objects were missing.
The French authorities have launched an investigation, led by the Division of Territorial Crime (DCT), to uncover the motive behind the break-in. One hypothesis suggests industrial espionage, given the advanced stage of Renault's F1 2026 power unit development. In September 2024, factory staff released an audio clip of the engine running on a test bench, indicating significant progress.
Renault's decision to switch from in-house F1 power units to a customer supply deal with Mercedes has sparked controversy. The Comite Social et Economique (CSE) staff representative council expressed their dismay over the decision, warning of the risk of critical skills leaving the site.
