Get ready, Honolulu! A shifting cold front is bringing a medley of weather conditions your way, and it's time to buckle up for some changes. This isn't just a quick blip; we're talking about a week of mixed conditions as this weather system makes its way through the islands.
The weakening cold front is currently making its presence known in Maui County and is steadily marching towards the Big Island. Expect increased showers, particularly along the windward slopes, and those signature breezy east-northeasterly trade winds. The National Weather Service in Honolulu (NWS) has confirmed that the front will bring a surge of showers, especially to the windward slopes.
This front has already delivered rainfall, with totals varying from 0.20 to a hefty 2.78 inches. But here's where it gets interesting: the front is expected to dissipate later this afternoon and into the evening. As it does, breezy northeast winds will move in, and these winds are expected to strengthen mid-week, thanks to a high-pressure system building north of the islands. The NWS also notes that mid-level ridging will continue to limit the intensity of the rainfall.
For those taking to the skies, this cold front means a shift in flying conditions. Expect VFR (Visual Flight Rules) conditions behind the front, but be prepared for MVFR (Marginal Visual Flight Rules) conditions during the front's passage. The windward and mauka regions will be particularly affected, with an AIRMET Sierra in effect due to clouds and showers.
And this is the part most people miss... The marine forecast is also getting a shake-up. The NWS warns of rough waters, with a Small Craft Advisory already in effect for many coastal areas today. This advisory will expand to include all Hawaiian coastal waters starting this evening.
Surfers, take note! A series of north to northeast swells are on their way, promising elevated surf along north-facing shores. Areas like west Maui will also see increased activity. The NWS stated that a moderate, short-medium period, north-northwest to north swell arrived overnight and will produce elevated surf along north-facing shores. Plus, watch out for minor coastal flooding due to peak monthly tides, which could lead to shoreline and low-lying area inundation.
However, there's a silver lining. Despite the breezy trades and the promise of stronger winds, critical fire weather conditions are not expected in the coming days. The NWS reports that lingering moisture will prevent any major fire weather concerns.
