Bold statement: Namibia is taking a bold step to fortify its food system against climate shocks, launching a transformative adaptive agriculture program to protect vulnerable communities and boost national food security. But here's where it gets controversial: will these climate-smart interventions be enough to outpace increasingly variable weather patterns and persistent droughts?
Namibia unveiled a new adaptive agriculture initiative aimed at increasing the resilience of farming communities affected by drought and expanding food security across five regions. The announcement was made during a signing ceremony in Windhoek, the capital, by Ndiyakupi Nghituwamata, the executive director of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Land Reform.
The project is designed to assist vulnerable households in regions experiencing rising climate variability, where extended droughts have jeopardized rural livelihoods and contributed to food insecurity for an estimated 1.4 million people in the 2023/2024 period. Under the initiative, 6,000 women- and youth-led households—approximately 24,000 individuals—will gain access to agricultural inputs, small livestock, and climate-smart technologies. These include solar-powered irrigation systems, hydroponic setups, and shade-net structures to mitigate heat and conserve water.
In addition, training will be provided to 60 agricultural extension officers and 6,000 farmers to strengthen capabilities in climate-smart production and sustainable farming practices. The program also calls for the creation of regional drought action plans to enhance early response, risk management, and the dissemination of food security information across the country.
Nghituwamata stressed that the initiative arrives at a pivotal moment, noting that the 2024/2025 rainy season to date has brought adequate rainfall. However, she underscored that these interventions are about building long-term resilience for farming communities and aligning with national objectives to achieve a secure, climate-resilient Namibia.
