With Wembanyama just one assist shy of a triple-double, he launched a Hail Mary pass that Castle converted into a game-winning bucket with mere seconds left on the clock. Wembanyama's 31 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists, along with Castle's 23 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, made them the fifth duo in NBA history to achieve a 20-point triple-double in a single game. It was also the first time in Spurs history that two players accomplished this feat. Despite the loss to the Golden State Warriors, the duo's performance was nothing short of extraordinary.
Wembanyama, reflecting on the play, expressed his thoughts on the inbounds pass, stating, 'I was thinking about [the double triple-double] of course. I don't even remember the score, but I think it was the right decision.'
Castle, a second-year guard, shared his sentiments, saying, 'Obviously, we wanted to win. But yeah, happy to get [two triple-doubles]. It is something great to be a part of. Proud to be a part of it, but we needed to win to add onto it.'
The Warriors' Stephen Curry, however, stood in their way, racking up a game-high 46 points and leading his team to a comeback victory. Curry's 21 3-pointers showcased his exceptional skills, turning a 16-point deficit into a 10-point lead in the final quarter.
Castle and Wembanyama's triple-doubles were achieved in the game's closing seconds. Castle secured his 10th rebound with 5.4 seconds remaining, completing his triple-double. Wembanyama, in a display of determination, completed his second career 30-point triple-double with a full-court heave that Castle banked in just before the final buzzer.
Despite the impressive performance, Wembanyama's eight turnovers marked a career high, and Castle had his fourth consecutive game with 10 assists. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson praised their efforts, acknowledging the team's peaks and valleys and emphasizing the need for consistency.
